Luck is not chance—
It's Toil—
Fortune's expensive smile
Is earned—
The Father of the Mine
Is that old-fashioned Coin
We spurned—
Theme : Luck isn't a chance given to you . It's what you make out of your life.
Significance:
-- Luck is not chance-- It's toil -- This stanza basically is represented by the theme .
-- Fortune's expensive smile-- is earned-- This stanza represents how you analyze what you have around you. Such as what you think is your fortune and how you live your life.
--The father of mine -- that old fashioned coin -- we spurned -- I believe this stanza relates to most teenagers now in days. We want to make our own mistakes and can't stand when our parent says, " I made that mistake and I don't want you to make it." This stanza is saying that when we feel we have luck is when we do something for ourselves on our own.
Figurative Language: Personification -- Fortune's expensive smile--
Mood : Focused- because as Emily Dickenson says, " Luck is not chance."

  1. The page is very nice. This poem has a deep meaning. I believe what it says is that everything you got, you or someone else works for it. As well everything you receive you earn.

  2. Amanda,

Great poem! Short and brief, yet it has a lot of meaning. You are correct, the theme of the poem is that luck is what you make of it. I liked your analysis and your comparison with teenagers. You have a very detailed about me sections. You have a few grammatical mistakes though. Great Job!
