Luck is not chance—
It's Toil—
Fortune's expensive smile
Is earned—
The Father of the Mine
Is that old-fashioned Coin
We spurned—
Theme : Luck isn't a chance given to you . It's what you make out of your life.
Significance:
-- Luck is not chance-- It's toil -- This stanza basically is represented by the theme .
-- Fortune's expensive smile-- is earned-- This stanza represents how you analyze what you have around you. Such as what you think is your fortune and how you live your life.
--The father of mine -- that old fashioned coin -- we spurned -- I believe this stanza relates to most teenagers now in days. We want to make our own mistakes and can't stand when our parent says, " I made that mistake and I don't want you to make it." This stanza is saying that when we feel we have luck is when we do something for ourselves on our own.
Figurative Language: Personification -- Fortune's expensive smile--
Mood : Focused- because as Emily Dickenson says, " Luck is not chance."

My name is Emily Dickinson. I was born on December 10th, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. My parents were pillars of the local community. Pillars are known as people that are the chief supporters of society, state, or institution. My father was quite strict and no matter what he disliked and fought about my actions, I still called him, "pure and terrible". As most people know about how I liked to write poetry, I also liked to sing, dance, and draw. Actually I related songs to my poems. While I was in college, my father decided that I was getting too sick and that I should leave school. Later I was secluded from society and I gave an impression of coldness and simplicity. Then I gave an impression that I was romanticised, and people started to assume that was the reason why I was wearing white dresses. I may seem social but I like to keep to myself. My poetry is my communication with the world. Poetry is my only friend in life. And he, poetry, was my only companion when I chose to isolate myself completely. During this isolation, I didn't want to be visited by doctors or anyone and I knew that my sickness was getting worst. Finally, the Bright's disease has taken over my body and that's when my death took place on May 15, 1886.
